Reverend Ronald P. Lengwin

Father Ronald P. Lengwin is Vicar General and General Secretary of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. He also serves as the chief spokesperson for the Diocese, a position he has held for over 20 years under two bishops, making him one of the most recognized names - and voices - in Pittsburgh media.

Father Lengwin was ordained a priest for the diocese in 1966 by then Bishop John J. Wright at Saint Paul Cathedral. He served as a parochial vicar at St. Peter Parish in Butler beginning in 1966 and at St. Philip Parish in Crafton starting in 1972. In 1974, he began his lengthy career in communications when he was appointed Assistant Director for Communications for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. In 1975, he began service as Director of Communications for Christian Associates of Southwestern Pennsylvania, which for 42 years has been a regional agency bringing together 26 Christian churches and their leaders from 16 Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant communions to promote Christian unity.

To the general public Father Lengwin perhaps is best known as the host of the popular radio talk show "Amplify," which is heard on Sunday nights on KDKA at 9 p.m. The show has been on the air since 1975. Father Lengwin previously hosted "The Place," an interview program with high school students on KQV radio from 1973-75.  From 1975-1991, he was affiliated with KDKA TV, helping to produce a public affairs program titled "Not Just Sunday" and then as an on-air contributor of religious segments for "Weekend Magazine". He was the first producer of then Bishop Donald W. Wuerl's program, "The Teaching of Christ," that aired on KDKA TV from 1988-2006, serving in various roles during those years. Father Lengwin begins each "Amplify" show by welcoming listeners to "a program that looks at life from a religious perspective." The main part of "Amplify" is Father Lengwin interviewing the author of a book that is related to the topic of faith or faith as it is lived today.  But he also tells at the beginning of each "Amplify" stories called "Faith and Imagination." The stories are written by Connie Ann Valenti, a parishioner at St. Scholastica Parish, Aspinwall, and with whom Father Lengwin wrote a column, "Home Again," in the Pittsburgh Catholic newspaper from 1979-2004. Over 150 of those more than 1,000 stories have been collected in a book to be published by Orbis Books in 2012.

In 1977, Father Lengwin was appointed by Bishop Vincent M. Leonard to serve as diocesan Director for Communications. Under Bishop Wuerl in 1992, he became diocesan Director of Public Affairs and from 1994-2002, he served as diocesan Secretary for Pastoral Life. Since 2001, Father Lengwin has also been the Director of the Diocesan Mission and Pilgrimage office, and from 2002, he has served as Director of the Diocesan Office for Public and Community Affairs. Father Lengwin also coordinates the annual display of the Pittsburgh Crèche at the U.S. Steel Plaza on Grant Street in Downtown Pittsburgh during the Advent and Christmas seasons.

In 2010, Bishop David A. Zubik appointed Father Lengwin Vicar General and General Secretary of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Father Lengwin has served on many boards locally and state-wide. Among other responsibilities, he is currently on the board of the Pittsburgh Catholic and moderator of the Communications Committee for the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference. He is a convener of the Priest-Rabbi Dialogue and the Religious Leaders Fellowship, an interfaith coalition of Christian and non-Christian leaders. He was also a member of the Youth Crime Prevention Council, the United Way Board of Directors, the City of Pittsburgh Cable Advisory Committee, the YouthPlaces Board of Directors, the Pittsburgh Public Service Fund, and the FBI Citizen's Academy.

2012 John Cardinal Wright Award Winners
Mr. Michael Gallagher - BLS Class of 1973

Mike is a native of Sheraden, in the west end of Pittsburgh, and he literally grew up in the shadow of Holy Innocents Church where he and his family are still members. Always an active Catholic, Mike serves on the pastoral council there as well as putting his fine singing voice to great use as a cantor.

Following his studies at the Latin School, Mike graduated from the University of Pittsburgh while majoring in English and Philosophy. All the while, he continued to contemplate a possible vocation to the ministerial priesthood.

He met Marlea Givens in 1976 and after four years his heart made his decision for him as he married the love of his life in 1980. Thirty-two years later, their pride and joy are their four children: Brendan, Daniel, John Morgan and Mary Kate. Son Daniel is currently in Rome studying as a seminarian for the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Regarding his career history, Mike worked for several years in the charter department of the Gateway Clipper Fleet. He later was given an opportunity to work for a start-up company in the alternative fuels field, CTI Biofuels. Working with innovative technologies developed at Carnegie Mellon University, the company had initial success until it was a victim of the 2008 market collapse. Mike worked in a temporary position for the Diocese of Pittsburgh with the Director of Stewardship, B.L.S.' own Pat Joyce '67. In this job he helped to implement new initiatives by Bishop Zubik that will help secure the future of the Church in Pittsburgh. Just this spring, Mike embarked on another new position with a start-up known as Earthwater Technologies, a water exploration and development company.

But music has always been Mike Gallagher's claim to fame as he comes from a musical background. His father, John, used to sing on WWSW radio during the depression. Mike himself is one of eight children and almost all of his brothers and sisters have been cantors in their own parishes! In addition to his duties cantoring at our annual Cardinal Wright Vocations Mass, Mike can be found singing and playing his guitar in many local clubs in Pittsburgh. He has performed at the Three Rivers Arts Festival, the Pittsburgh Irish Festival and at various colleges and universities across Southwestern Pennsylvania. He's also had many radio appearances on KDKA-AM and WYEP-FM. He's also sung on Diane Byrnes' "Echoes of Erin" show on WEDO-AM. Maybe if we're lucky, he might even sing a song at our awards dinner!

Mike's original works draw upon the influences of both American roots music as well as Celtic traditions. A master of the Irish ballad as well as haunting love songs, Mike has established himself as an entertainer who brings emotion, humor and spirit to every performance. The B.L.S. Alumni Association can also attest to this as he has sung and played his guitar for us at our Vocations Mass for many years. Known primarily for performing Irish and Scottish folk music, Mike has been a musical presence throughout the Tri-State area for several decades. He also specializes in contemporary acoustic music and songwriting and has several recordings to his credit. His discography includes: "Allegheny...Home", "Tomorrow is a Road", "St. Patrick's Day", "Dancin' on the Earth" and "The Michael Gallagher Collection". His latest release, "Saints & Scholars" is a masterful collection collection of original, contemporary and traditional Irish tunes. Mike co-produced this song with Al Snyder of the Corbin-Hanner Band.

The alumni association wishes to congratulate this lifelong Catholic role model, husband, father and entertainer... a most worthy recipient of the 2012 Cardinal Wright Award!
Mr. Guy Junker

Guy Junker has had a career-long attachment to sports while maintaining a strong Catholic faith throughout his entire life. He attended St. Wendelin's grade school in Carrick and was an altar server. The high school there closed when he was still in the sixth grade, so he attended and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1974. He then attended Penn State and graduated with high distinction in 1978 with a Bachelors degree in Journalism. He also lettered in baseball for the Nittany Lions. Afterwards, he attended the University of Manchester in England on a foreign exchange program and interned at the BBC in London.

His professional career has featured many radio and TV stops as well as newspaper and magazine work. He first started in Uniontown in 1978 getting paid a whopping $10 per game to broadcast high school football games there. But that didn't matter...sports would turn out to be his life's calling. He went on later to win 6 Emmy Awards in the "Best Sports Series" category for his work on "The Penn State Football Story". He has hosted this program for 23 years through the end of last season.

Guy is probably best known for his 13 years on "Sportsbeat" with Stan Savran where the catchphrase from each caller was, "Stan and Guy, first time caller...love the show!". This show was voted by the Associated Press as the "Best Sports Show in Pennsylvania" and by the "Pittsburgh City Paper" as the best sports talk show in Pittsburgh. Guy also worked for 10 years on the Pittsburgh Steelers radio network doing pre, post and halftime reports on WDVE. Currently, he is working as sports anchor and reporter for WTAE-TV Channel 4 in Pittsburgh and hosts a weekly sports talk show for Trib Live Radio.
He has also used his extensive sports knowledge in coaching young people. He has served as a youth baseball coach in Shaler Township, coached amateur Penguins youth hockey and also worked with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Allegheny County. In addition, he hosts a golf event every fall to benefit the Bradley Center.

He and his wife, Darla are longtime parishioners at St. Bonaventure in Shaler Township and all three of their children, Emilee, Dylan and Natalee attended Catholic grade school there. Emilee graduated from Shaler this June and will be attending Penn State Altoona in August; Dylan will be a senior this fall at Central Catholic and plays hockey for the Vikings. Natalee will be entering her freshman year at Shaler in September.
The alumni association wishes to congratulate this lifelong Catholic role model, husband, father and entertainer... a most worthy recipient of the 2012 Cardinal Wright Award!
