Walter Butor, OMI Ordination
His Eminence, Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, ordained to the priesthood, his Oblate brother, Father Walter Butor, class of 1971, on June 28th, 2003. Walter was ordained at St. Benedict the African Parish, in Chicago, where he did his ministry as a seminarian. Fr. Walt completed his undergraduate in communications at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, and then worked in Pittsburgh at various jobs. Fr. Walt entered formation in St. Louis in 1996, and took his first vows in 1998, and then began studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree in 2003.
Having a great desire to work with the poor and minority populations, Fr. Butor offered whatever services he could at the predominately Black Catholic parish, where he was ordained. Fr. Walt also had an interest in working with Native Americans; consequently he served a year of pastoral internship on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota. For his first assignment, Fr. Walt became part of the Oblate community ministering with the Native Americans and Euro-American in Sisseton, SD. located on the reservation of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux.
